500 million people worldwide are currently infected with Hepatitis B or C, this is over 10 times the number infected with HIV/Aids. Between them, Hepatitis B & C kill 1.5 million people per year. One in every three people on the planet have been exposed to either or both viruses and shockingly most of the 500 million people who are infected don’t even know they are.
These shocking facts have been brought to light again as the launch of World Hepatitis Day 2008 comes closer. Hepatitis is a serious disease and as you can see not that many people know about it. The idea of this years Hepatitis campaign is to strike up awareness of the fact that one in twelve people on the planet are infected with Hepatitis. 64 Countries have already started campaigning and the awareness needs to be raised to the same level as HIV/Aids. The disease kills over 1.5 million people a year and yet we all still barely know what the disease is?!
